I participated in OTAKON 2022, an East Asian pop culture fan event held in Washington DC from July 29th to July 30th.

I was given an hour and a half panel slot as a game composer, so I picked up some of the game titles I have worked on in the past and introduced my remix work of game music and what I usually do as a game composer to the fans of each game showing what I usually do.

The panel consisted mainly of an in-depth explanation of the music for the climactic scene of Metal Gear Solid 4, which was one of the most memorable games in my career.

In the kind of game music that I am often involved with, there is music for in-play music and music for movie scenes. Movie scenes are called "cutscenes" in game terminology, and I am often in charge of music for these scenes. Unlike music for movies or TV dramas, the role of cutscenes is to explain the game's development and story in a short movie, which can be several dozen seconds or several minutes long, and to explain the situation precisely to the player and to lift his or her spirits. The scene featured here is the climax of a bare-knuckle fight between the two main characters, and while MGS4 is known for its complex international politics and depiction of weapons and technology that could appear in the near future, the climax of the piece featured here skips over all of those cool elements to show the protagonist and his antagonist in a bare-knuckle fight.

And the only request the director gave me was to direct a Showa-era scene in which the two gang leaders beat each other up on a riverbank, then turn over on their backs on the bank, with the setting sun in the background and say, "You're pretty good," "You too," and "Ha ha ha ha". And all I was given was a storyboard-like image of two men punching each other.

When I am faced with such a difficult task, I rely on the technique of creating a mind map, writing down all the necessary elements and the given situation, and from there, step by step, I put them into specific sounds and instruments to be used. In this case, I divided the several-minute video into four sequences and gave each of them a role, eventually building a flow to produce changes in emotion and situation up to the point of "You too".

In my case, when I have trouble coming up with ideas, I have a variety of other ways to deal with it, but in particular, the method of mind-mapping my thinking process makes it easy to go back and start over if I get lost in the middle of the process. I can also use the ideas that come to me in the middle of the process for other projects. I have also recently realized that this way of organizing my ideas when creating music for Dugo is very useful for creating derivative content, such as music videos, production story texts, and alternate mix versions.

I have written a lot in the past on this blog about how to create a large amount of different content as fast as possible and relate them to each other, and these methods that I adopted when creating game music have been very useful.

The OTAKON panel lasted about an hour and a half, but I am proud to say that it was a casual chat with the two moderators, and I think that the many game fans who gathered for the panel were able to enjoy itl in a relaxed atmosphere.

The panel concluded with a live performance of "A Perfect Circle," a remix of the music used in the MGS4 panel, which was created just for OTAKON 2022.
