Today I went to see the Canadian rock band Rush on their reunion tour. For three hours, we enjoyed a two-part set surrounded by tough older men, all sporting various designs of band T-shirts.

Rush only visited Japan once in the 1980s, performing at the Budokan in Tokyo. I was a student back then, and my friends and I were constantly calling Ticket Pia and Udo; luckily, we managed to snag seats in the third row of the Budokan. They haven't been to Japan since, so this marks only their second live appearance here in decades.

   
The venue is the Scotiabank Arena, an ice hockey arena. As we approached, groups of mostly middle-aged and elderly men and women wearing Rush T-shirts began to gather one after another.

 
By the time the doors opened, it was already quite crowded, and the smell of marijuana filled the air.

There is also a live photo shoot happening today, so you might even spot yourself in a photo somewhere!

As for the merchandise store, the line was about 100 meters long, so I gave up on getting a T-shirt.

The concert consists of two parts and lasts about three hours in total. I thought about this during Sarah McLachlan's concert the other day, but here, everyone in the crowd seemed to be enjoying themselves quite freely. Even after the performance and the MC began, there were people screaming, talking with their companions, or even walking around during the show, all amidst the smell of marijuana inside the venue.

A characteristic of this band's live performances is that during the drum fills for popular songs, the entire audience plays air drums instead of air guitar, and on this day, everyone played air drums during that part, applauding the new female drummer.

Aside from the female drummer, the two original members are already 70. Although he wasn't quite as sharp as he once was, Geddy Lee--handling bass, vocals, and keyboards--played the bass and sang with a dance-like energy, occasionally jumping rhythmically. It was wonderful to see him tackle even the most difficult songs with so much vitality left in him. As an elder statesman of progressive rock, I feel there is a great deal to learn from him.

今日は再結成ツアー中のカナダのロックバンドRushのライブに行ってきました。みなそれぞれ様々なデザインのバンドTシャツを着た、いかついオッサンたちに囲まれて三時間、二部構成の長丁場を楽しんできました。

Rushは過去80年代に一度だけ来日し、東京では武道館で一回だけライブをやったことがあって、当時はまだ学生だった自分は友達とチケットぴあだったかウドーに電話をかけまくって、幸運にも武道館の3列目を取ることができたんです。それ以来彼らは日本に来ることはなかったので、実に何十年かぶりの2回目のライブ参戦です。

   
会場はスコシアバンク・アリーナというアイスホッケーのアリーナです。会場に近づくにつれてRush Tシャツを着た中高年を中心とした男女のグループが続々と集結してきていました。

 
開場前になるともう相当な混雑が起こっており、周囲はマリファナの匂いで充満していました。

この日はライブ撮影も行われるとのことで、もしかしたら自分もどこかに映り込むかも？

ライブは2部構成で全部で3時間ほどの長丁場。先日のサラ・マクラクランのコンサートでも思ったのですが、こちらでは観客が皆かなり自由に楽しんでいる様子です。演奏が始まってもMCになってもずーっと叫んでいる人がいたり、ずっと連れの人と会話していたり、演奏中でも歩き回っている人たちがチラホラいたりと、また会場の中でもマリファナの匂いがしていました。

このバンドのライブの特徴として、人気曲のお決まりのドラムフィルのときには、オーディエンスみんなでエアギターならぬエアドラムをやるというのがあって、この日もその部分ではばっちりみんなエアドラムを決めつつ、新加入の女性ドラマーに拍手喝采を送っていました。

その女性ドラマーを除いたオリジナルメンバーの二人はすでに70代、さすがにかつてほどのキレはなかったものの、ベース・ボーカル・キーボード担当のゲディ・リーは時折リズミカルに飛び跳ねながら踊るようにベースを弾いて歌っており、難易度の高い曲も余力を残して余裕で演奏している感じが素晴らしかったです。プログレの大先輩として色々見習うところが多いなと思いました。
